Five Miles and the Crazy PF

Squeezed in a quick five miles before XC practice. Actually, it was really 4.2 miles before the practice and I tacked on the other .8 during the run back to the school afterwards.

The run went well. What continues to baffle me is the plantar fasciitis. In my last post, I think I might have inadvertently made it sound like the PF was pretty much going away. I wish that were true, but not the case. As Mark pointed out, PF can come and go. Yesterday morning, it did flare up again and I was glad I had planned a rest day anyway. It wasn't horrible, but it still made itself known. However, today I barely felt it. Overall, I do think it's going away, but I still think I have a ways to go before it's gone for good.

Ran 5.0 miles @ 7:46/mile pace.
Paved roads.
Slightly hilly.
Lower 60s, sunny.
Shorts, short sleeved shirt.

If we're going to do any training runs together before WS next year, I need to get myself fast enough to run with you and your sub-8 pace.

I've had PF problems in the past and they seem to be totally solved. I have custom orthotics from a sports-specialist DPM. I have inserts in my bedroom slippers and I never walk around barefooted.

I also change my shoes at lower miles than most people do. Being a larger runner with a history of PF and Achilles tendonitis, I always figure that I'd rather change shoes early and waste some life in them rather than getting hurt because I was cheap.

In the spring, I have some "set" events that I like to do that are all good WS training, if you want to travel to MA. There are three great training races in MA in March, April, and May. I will probably jump up to the 50M at Pineland next year, and I might do the Wapack race instead of the GAC six-hour in May.

One of my favorite early season workouts is repeats on the Mt. Mansfield (Stowe ski area) toll road here in VT. Each repeat climbs half a mile vertically and covers 8.6 miles. I did 3 this year and I might shoot for a 4-peat next spring.

What are your thoughts about MDI?

Damon - thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. A lot of those options sound great, I'm sure we'll be able to work something out.

Marc - I don't know. To be honest, I'm not thinking of it too much. Too focused on getting rid of the PF, but I'm still going to run MDI regardless of how I feel.

Boo! What a pain in the ass. I wish I had a magic solution for you, but then again, if there were a magic solution someone wiser in the ways of running would have told you by now.

What has worked for me and PF is having my BF massage the bottom of my foot. It is painful, but finally it is going away. Deep massage seems to work!
