Torn Meniscus

Well, looks like I'll be out for a while. Doctor called and said I have a torn meniscus. Will likely need surgery. Seeing sports doctor next to determine course of action. To say this sucks would be an understatement of epic proportions.

Torn meniscus is such a better diagnosis than anything involving the ACL as you were speculating. They can go in there orthoscopically, trim the bit that is causing the irritation, and you can be running again very quickly.

I like Bob's comment. Is Bob a Doctor?

that's too bad about surgery, I would be interested in the professionals advice on cross-training in the interim.

btw, a friend of mine in North Dakota commutes every work day by mountain bike all year, temps are no excuse

Wow. I know it sucks, but at least you know what it is now. Better than being in the dark.

Just focus on getting back into shape and ramp up slow for the VT100. I will be there to cheer you on (and get my volunteer time in of course).

Oof. Sorry to hear. I hope it "untears" soon!

I'm not a doctor, but I've torn my ACL and I've torn my meniscus. Last thing I remember reading, the worry was about the ACL. Given that, torn meniscus and not ACL sounds like a positive development to me. Didn't mean to imply it doesn't suck to have any knee injury.

Not the best of news, but from Bob's comments and experience it sounds like a little trimming and you'll be back at it soon enough.

Good luck with this.

No worries, I knew where you were coming from Bob. While it's still a bummer, things could definitely be much worse and I'm starting to realize that now.

That's a bummer, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. A work colleague had that surgery recently and she was fully recovered (climbing stairs, running, etc.) within about 3 or 4 weeks. Which is still a long time in running terms, but . . .

I'm so sorry to hear that, Jamie! Hopefully, it'll be fixed up soon and you'll be back to your running soon. Let us know what the sports doc says!!

That does suck. And I can somehow even feel your disappointment underneath that understatement over the computer. I have really enjoyed reading your blog entries and know how much work you put into your running. This is another challenge for you and I am sure you will do great attacking this - which some help. Good luck and speedy recovery.

Just happened on your post. Sorry to hear that. Keep us up to date on the rehab when the plan is determined. I've got my date with the doc on Monday...

That really sucks ... what's the recovery time. I suspect a guy your age will be back up and running in no time.
